The Harlem Superstars are proud to announce the signing of Chris "Super Chicken" Turnquist. Chris was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas. He was the youngest of eight kids. At first, Chris was apprehensive about playing basketball, because he was not very tall and his older brothers and sisters would push him around on the court. Amazingly, when Chris reached high school he had a growth spurt and grew to 6'8" tall. One day he asked his mom, "What planet did I come from?" She calmly replied, "Maybe you ate too many vegetables." Chris took advantage of his good fortune. He practiced every day and went to the playgrounds to play against the older kids in his community.

His hard work paid off. He tried out for his high school basketball team and made it. Chris was asked to be a member of the Bahamian National Team. He had dreams and aspirations to play college basketball and receive a good education.

Playing basketball in the USA was a tall task for an unproven kid from the Bahamas. The only notable basketball player to make it off the island in recent years was Rick Fox who went to the University of North Carolina, and then went on to play for the Los Angeles Lakers. Chris realized that his dreams were almost impossible, but he did not give up. He did not listen to the people on the island, who laughed at him and told him he would never make it. They told him that he sh ould go get a job at the Atlantis Hotel Resort and become a bell hop. The negativity motivated Chris, and he would not give up. He had added stress because his mom had to support eight kids and money was scarce for them.

Once Chris arrived on campus, he was an instant hit with the students. They loved his Bahamian accent and his wonderful personality and attitude. They also loved the fact that his nick name was "Chicken," a name he adopted as a kid growing up in the Bahamas. Many students asked him, "How did you get your nickname "Chicken"?" He simply explained that growing up, he had to work hard to make money. When he was a kid he played around the port of the Bahamas, where the cruise ships docked, and one day he came up with an ingenious idea. He encouraged tourists to throw quarters from the deck of the ship into the clear blue ocean. Chris would dive in and retrieve them. The tourists loved it. One tourist said he had legs like a chicken and his friends laughed. Chris loved the name and didn't care as long as he was diving for change and making money. From that day on he was known as the Chicken who dives for quarters. He did not stop there. In college he would go to the local 7-Eleven store and wait till closing time. Then he'd convince the attendant to not throw the left-ove r hot dogs away. The attendant would give them to Chris. He'd bring=2 0them to his dorm room to share with his friends.

Chris is a Superstar now and his intelligence and vision has helped him achieve his goals. There were many speed bumps to slow his progress, but nothing could stop him. He never quit!
